About these formats
What is a GIF file?
GIF dates to 1987 and survives almost entirely because of animation. It is limited to a 256-colour palette per frame, which makes it a poor fit for photographic content, and animated GIFs are usually several times larger than the equivalent MP4 or WebM video.
Read the format guideWhat is a JPG file?
JPG is a lossy image format published in 1992 and still the most widely supported photo format in existence. It discards detail the eye is least likely to notice to reach small file sizes, which makes it ideal for photographs and a poor choice for text, line art or anything needing transparency.
