Smallpdf alternative

Smallpdf is a polished PDF suite built around document workflows: signing, storage sync and team accounts, all processed on its servers. Filoven covers the same PDF operations in your browser with no upload, plus image, video, audio, 3D and developer tools. Smallpdf wins on workflow, Filoven on privacy and breadth.

How Smallpdf works

Smallpdf is a document workflow product with conversion attached, not a raw converter. The value sits in what happens around the file: e-signature, cloud storage connections, team seats and a polished interface across web, desktop and mobile. That workflow layer requires a server holding the document, so processing is remote by design. It is a coherent product decision rather than a shortcut, and it is the reason the two products are not really substitutes.

When Smallpdf is the better pick

  • Signature workflows with other people: sending a document out, tracking who signed and storing the audit trail. That needs a server and Filoven does not attempt it.
  • Teams that want documents synced to Dropbox or Google Drive and picked up on another device.
  • Mobile-first PDF work, where a dedicated app beats a browser tab.
  • Organisations that want one vendor for the whole document lifecycle rather than a conversion tool.

When Filoven is the better pick

  • PDFs that must not be uploaded: contracts under NDA, medical records, financial statements, anything under a retention policy.
  • The same session covering a PDF, a video and a data file, without three separate products.
  • Quick one-off jobs, merge, split, compress, rotate, without an account or a queue.
  • Working offline or behind a network that blocks file uploads outright.

Common questions

Can Filoven replace Smallpdf for a team?

For conversion and editing, yes. For signature routing and cloud storage sync, no. If your team's workflow depends on sending documents out for signature and tracking them, that is a server-side product by nature and Smallpdf is built for it.

Does Filoven compress PDFs as well as Smallpdf?

For typical documents the results are comparable, since both rely on the same underlying techniques of image downsampling and stream compression. The difference is where it happens. Filoven compresses in the tab, so a 50 MB file is never transmitted anywhere.

Can I sign a PDF without uploading it?

Yes. Filoven's signing tool places a signature on the document in the browser and saves the result locally. What it does not do is send the document to another person for their signature, which requires a server to hold it in between.

Why does Filoven cover video and 3D as well as PDF?

Because the browser can run all of them and the constraint that shapes Smallpdf, server cost per file, does not apply when the user's own machine does the work. Breadth is close to free under a local-first architecture and expensive under a hosted one.
