About these formats
What is a FLAC file?
FLAC compresses audio losslessly, typically to 50-60% of the original WAV size while decoding back to a bit-identical waveform. It is the standard choice for archiving music collections, and it supports rich metadata and embedded artwork that WAV handles poorly.
Read the format guideWhat is a WAV file?
WAV stores uncompressed PCM audio, so it is a bit-exact record of the waveform with no encoding loss at all. That makes it the standard working format for recording and editing, and a poor choice for distribution: roughly 10 MB per minute of CD-quality stereo.
